Have you ever wondered what people ate in Florida before cattle, citrus, and other common "Florida foods" were introduced? This talk by Rachael Kangas, West Central & Central Region Director of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, will show how archeological research and historical documents come together to reveal how people in Southwest Florida 2,000 years ago answered life's perennial question: what's for dinner?

EVERY THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH! Join the Gulfport Historical Society as they take a stroll through history in Gulfport. The tour examines the creation of this small seaside hamlet; the tour guides — all Gulfport locals with a penchant for history and storytelling — share the town's history and stories with the group. The tour starts at the Gulfport History Museum where you can take a peek at some of their historic photos.
Tour is free for Gulfport Historical Society members. All others pay $15 per person. We have a water cooler at the museum; please bring your refillable bottle to fill up before the tour. These tours sell out, so advance ticket purchase is highly suggested. Members should pre-register to ensure they have a spot. We don't love turning people away, but when the group gets too large it's hard for everyone to hear our tour guides.

Not only did Fab Four capture hearts and light up stadiums, they also, Kealing reveals, taught us something important about the connection between music and activism. Join us for this fun, interactive talk about a popular denizen of our shores. Black Skimmers are colonial seabirds that nest on open beaches throughout much of the US. This interactive talk will allow you to choose a banded Black Skimmer from the Tampa Bay area and make predictions about whether they stay in our region to breed and overwinter or go elsewhere. You will then hear what we know about your bird and others from the more than 15,000 band resights we have in our database. Black Skimmers are long-lived birds with complicated life histories that we are just beginning to understand.
Our speaker, Beth Forys is a professor of Environmental Science and Biology at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, FL. She has been studying Black Skimmers (and other beach nesting birds) since 2000 and is still amazed by how little she knows! She teaches classes in Conservation Biology, GIS, and Field Ornithology.
